Ponta da Piedade: by boat or on foot

The headland south of town is a maze of sea stacks, arches and grottoes. See it from the water first, then walk the top.

  • On foot: walkways along the headland from Canavial to Praia do Pinhão, with a lighthouse in service since 1 July 1913 at the centre.
  • From the lighthouse: a long stairway down to the sea, where boatmen take passengers into the grottoes.
  • By boat: shared trips leave Lagos marina for the grottoes; small boats slip into places the big ones cannot.
