The Benagil cave: boat trips and the rules
The Benagil cave, the sea cave with a hole in its roof, sits on the cliff coast between Portimão and Carvoeiro. Here is every way to see it, with prices from local operators and the rules in full.

- Private boat€294–€518
- Guided kayak€34–€50

The rules at the cave
Since 2024 the Portimão harbour master, part of Portugal’s maritime authority, sets the rules around Benagil after consulting the Lagoa council and the environment agencies:
- No landing on the sand inside the cave, for anyone.
- No reaching the caves by swimming or on anything that floats.
- No kayak rental without a guide. Guided groups: one guide per six kayaks.
- Life jackets on for the whole visit, in boats and kayaks.
Checked October 2026: Capitania do Porto de Portimão, Edital 019/2024 and amendment 009/2025 and Autoridade Marítima Nacional, Benagil notice (30 July 2024)
So the photo of people on the beach under the skylight is history. What you get now is the view from the water, by boat or with a guide in a kayak. Every operator below is bound by the same rules.

Benagil questions
How long do boats stay inside the Benagil cave?
Two minutes for motor boats, and at most eight minutes for a guided kayak group, under the harbour master’s rules. No more than five motor boats and fourteen kayaks or boards may be inside at once.
Can I walk to the Benagil cave?
Not into it: there is no land route into the cave, and swimming in is banned. You can walk the cliff tops above Benagil on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, then see the cave from a boat or a guided kayak.
Can I swim into the Benagil cave?
No. Since the 2024 rules from the maritime authority, reaching the caves by swimming or on anything that floats (a lilo, a board) is banned, and so is landing on the sand inside.
Can I rent a kayak and paddle there on my own?
No. Kayak rental without a guide is banned in the cave area; guided groups keep one guide for every six kayaks. Book a guided tour instead (see the kayak table above).
Should I leave from Portimão or from Carvoeiro?
Carvoeiro is closer to the cave, so trips from there are a little shorter (about 1 h 30). From Portimão most trips take about two hours and pass more of the coast on the way.
Is a private boat worth it?
For a group, often yes. The cheapest private trip we found was €294 for the boat; shared by eight people that is about €37 each, close to a seat on a shared boat, and you choose the time.
Pick a date, we'll find the boat.
